Can a dependent partner work? Research the actual permission record

Check the dependent partner's own status and the proposed activity before accepting work. The principal applicant's job permission does not describe every accompanying person's rights. Make the enquiry specific to employment, self-employment or remote activity, and keep professional licensing as a separate question.

Read the route's dependent section

The UK’s Skilled Worker family guidance requires separate applications for eligible partners and children and describes what successful dependants can and cannot do. Its rules include route- and applicant-specific restrictions. This provides a UK example of why a partner’s position needs its own check rather than an assumption based on the principal worker. UK Government: Skilled Worker visa partners and children.

Build an activity-specific record

Begin with the exact status wording and the official dependent guidance. Write down what the job would actually involve, where it would be performed and who would engage you. Avoid using the word ‘remote’ as though it answers the work-permission or tax question by itself.

A job offer can still leave two gaps

Illustrative situation: a dependent partner is offered work in a regulated occupation. Even after resolving the immigration activity question, the professional-registration question may remain unanswered. Keep both as separate entries, with the relevant authority named for each. Do not treat a recruiter’s enthusiasm or a home-country qualification as confirmation that the person can immediately begin that role.

Do not rely on a household shortcut

Save the partner’s own decision and evidence alongside the enquiry. If the principal status changes, ask whether the dependent’s position needs another check or application. Record any unresolved point before a proposed start date. The worksheet is intended to organise a precise question; it does not assess an individual’s work rights.
