Map the transition from study to work using the current student permission, the intended next route and the institution’s completion process. Academic success, a job offer and immigration permission are separate pieces of evidence. Check what work and travel are permitted at each stage rather than treating graduation as an automatic status change.
Completion reporting can be a distinct event
The UK Graduate visa guidance requires the education provider to have told the Home Office that an eligible course was successfully completed. It says a person does not have to wait for a graduation ceremony or certificate once that reporting condition is met, and identifies other eligibility requirements. This is a UK route example, not a global post-study entitlement. UK Government: Graduate visa.
Draw a three-track transition
Ask the school which team handles completion evidence and immigration reporting. Ask the employer for the actual role and proposed start date. Use the immigration authority’s current route instructions to connect those facts; keep any unresolved gap visible instead of inserting an optimistic date.
| Track | Evidence | Outstanding question |
|---|---|---|
| Study | Course completion and institution contact | Has the required reporting happened? |
| Current permission | Conditions and expiry | What work remains permitted now? |
| Next route | Exact official eligibility and timing | What must happen before applying? |
| Work and travel | Offer, dates and planned journey | What is permitted while waiting? |
The ceremony date can mislead a calendar
Illustrative situation: a ceremony is scheduled after a student’s permission expiry, while academic completion may be confirmed earlier. Do not use the ceremony invitation alone to plan the application. Ask the institution and read the actual route’s evidence and timing instructions. Separately resolve whether a proposed job can begin during the transition; a future job offer does not settle that question.
Keep the fallback linked to real dates
Record what would change if results, sponsor reporting or a decision were delayed. Check housing and employment commitments before making them irreversible. Use the UK study planning guide for broader organisation when the UK is the destination, while checking the current official route for every status conclusion.
