Mail and official correspondence during migration: avoid losing important notices

Keep a dependable correspondence route while moving, with each important sender's own address-update process recorded. Keep a dependable correspondence route while moving, with each important sender’s own address-update process recorded. Separate the address where you live from any correspondence address the sender permits. A forwarding service can be useful, but do not assume it reaches every government notice or updates every application.

A sender may require its own notification

USCIS says postal-service address changes do not update its records and that USPS does not forward USCIS mail. Its guidance also explains that some immigration situations use different update procedures. This US example shows why the responsible sender’s current instructions matter; it does not establish worldwide mail or reporting rules. USCIS: How to Change Your Address.

Create a correspondence continuity list

Prioritise senders connected to active cases, time-sensitive payments and essential services. Ask what correspondence method is actually permitted and whether electronic notifications supplement physical letters. A relative’s willingness to scan a letter is not confirmation that an authority accepts that address for your case.

Deal with temporary accommodation explicitly

Illustrative situation: a household moves into a short let before finding a permanent home. Record both dates and ask active-case senders how to manage the temporary period. Set a personal review reminder for the next move. Do not erase the earlier address from your history or assume the temporary arrangement removes a notification duty.

Protect the contents as well as delivery

If someone helps with mail, agree what they may open, how they send sensitive scans and what happens to originals. Keep a log of important received notices and your responses. Where correspondence may already be missing, use the sender’s official case or account channel to establish the position rather than assuming silence means nothing requires action.
