Research an older relative’s actual residence route and care needs separately from the worker’s or student’s move. Build a factual care-and-permission file before making housing or care commitments.

What the official guidance establishes

The UK adult-dependent-relative guidance addresses a specific long-term-care route with evidence about care needs and care availability or affordability in the current country. Age alone is not the route description. Read GOV.UK: adult dependent relative route for the original scope and current instructions.

Describe the person’s actual circumstances

Record the family relationship, intended destination, existing care arrangements and support the relative wants. Use existing professional records for health or care facts and keep them confidential. Do not create a dependency narrative merely to fit an immigration label.

Separate care access from residence permission

Research the applicable family or other route using the actual sponsor circumstances. Independently ask about healthcare, care-provider access, accessibility and funding through the relevant services. Keep a private care plan distinct from an authority’s determination of a route condition.

Prepare a coordinated enquiry

List the specific permission question, care evidence available, accommodation proposal and unresolved practical gap. Seek case-specific advice where dependency is legally complex. Ask service providers what they can actually supply before assuming family assistance will cover all care.

Worked planning example

A fictional household plans to bring an older parent but has only estimated future care costs. Its file separates those estimates from existing medical and care records and requests actual service information. The worksheet does not label the parent eligible because of age.

Make permission and care decisions from their respective current sources. Keep the next action in the moving planner and use the guide library for the next part of your move.
