Non-citizen does not answer every banking question

The US FDIC’s GetBanked guidance says many US banks allow non-US citizens to open accounts and may accept different identification, such as a foreign passport or an ITIN. It also describes gathering identification and applying through the bank. The bank’s actual account conditions still matter; the guidance is not a promise that every applicant will be accepted. Build a product-specific enquiry

Separate the account opening question from fees and usable payment features. An institution’s brand name does not tell you which legal entity holds the deposit, which protection scheme applies, or whether a particular account can receive the payment you need. Ask the bank to identify those details.

An account that opens but cannot be used as planned

Illustrative situation: your employer expects local payroll details, but the account you researched is a savings product with different payment functions. Your comparison should record the mismatch before opening. Send the employer’s practical payment question to the bank without sharing payroll credentials, then keep the product’s answer. Account availability and suitability are separate decisions.

Make a safe next step

Find the bank through its official site and, where relevant, the financial regulator’s directory. Keep your initial message factual and avoid sending an entire immigration dossier unless the bank actually requests necessary evidence through its accepted channel. Do not treat opening an account as immigration permission, a tax-residence decision or proof that every deposit is protected.
