Before travelling during a renewal or status-change application, research how departure affects that application and what you would need to return. Write the current permission, application and journey dates together. A receipt confirming submission does not, by itself, answer every travel, re-entry or activity question.
Some application instructions expressly restrict travel
The UK’s Child Student extension guidance says an applicant must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before a decision, because doing so withdraws that application. This is a specific UK example; it demonstrates why the current route’s own instructions must be read rather than borrowed from another case. UK Government: Child Student visa extension.
Prepare a travel enquiry with all three timelines
Include the status expiry date, submission date and intended return date. Ask which guidance applies to the pending application as well as the existing permission. Do not shorten the question to whether your passport is valid: passport validity and the pending case are separate issues.
| Timeline | Details to record | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Existing permission | Category and expiry | What remains permitted on these dates? |
| Pending application | Type and submission reference | Does departure affect it? |
| Journey | Departure, transit and return | Which re-entry evidence is required? |
| Contingency | Work, study and family dependencies | What changes if return is delayed? |
Handle a family emergency without inventing an exception
Illustrative situation: urgent travel becomes necessary while a renewal is pending. Keep the genuine travel reason and dates with the case documents, then seek prompt advice from the responsible authority or an appropriately qualified adviser. Do not assume urgency creates an exception, or that an airline’s willingness to sell a ticket answers the immigration question.
Wait for an answer that covers the actual plan
Use the current official route guidance and retain written case-specific advice where available. Ask what further proof or decision is needed before booking non-refundable travel. If an answer only covers leaving, separately ask about boarding, re-entry and the right to resume work or study. This checklist is a preparation aid, not travel clearance.
