A dependent child approaching adulthood: research the status transition early

Research the child's actual dependent conditions before an age, education or activity change becomes urgent. Put status expiry, school plans and any relevant route wording on one timeline. Becoming an adult should prompt a careful route-specific enquiry, not an assumption that family permission either always continues or always ends.

An age label can miss existing-status conditions

The UK’s Skilled Worker dependant guidance includes a child over 18 who already has permission as the worker’s dependant within its stated child category. It also sets application and dependency conditions. That specific UK wording demonstrates why age alone does not answer the question; it must not be transferred to other routes or destinations. Build a transition question calendar

Use the child’s genuine education and living plans. Identify whose account holds the record and whether the young person needs their own access or consent arrangements under the actual service. Keep any chosen family review date separate from an official application deadline.

Do not assume the principal application settles every record

Illustrative situation: a parent plans a renewal while an older child prepares for university. Compare the child’s own permission and the relevant dependent instructions with the education plans. Ask which application and evidence applies to the child rather than simply adding the child to the parent’s checklist. Keep genuine household and education records for the professional or authority reviewing the question.

Give the young person a clear role

Agree who reads correspondence, gathers records and seeks answers, respecting the service’s actual account and privacy rules. Obtain qualified advice where continued stay or activity is uncertain. The calendar is a preparation tool, not a determination of dependency, permission to work or an entitlement to remain after a birthday.
