For a finite overseas assignment, write the intended return arrangements before departure as well as the destination tasks. Identify the employing entities, permitted activities, family arrangements and who pays for travel or a changed end date. An assignment letter should be compared with the relevant immigration, employment and social-security instructions.
Temporary work can have a defined return framework
Your Europe’s posted-worker guidance describes temporary work in another EU country and information an employer must provide about matters such as duration, remuneration, allowances and repatriation in covered cases. It also discusses social-security coordination. Those EU posting rules do not automatically govern every international assignment or employee. Create an assignment-to-return handover
Use the actual contract and employer’s written assignment terms. Ask which entity is responsible for each obligation and how a change is approved. Keep the family’s separate permission and service needs on the list instead of assuming the employee’s arrangement covers everyone.
| Stage | Question to resolve | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Departure | Which entity employs and pays me? | Employer and qualified advisers |
| Destination work | What activity and status are authorised? | Immigration authority and employer |
| Assignment end | Who pays travel and handles housing closure? | Written assignment parties |
| Return | What role, payroll and school arrangements resume? | Named home and family contacts |
An extension changes more than the flight
Illustrative situation: an employer asks for another period abroad after the original end date. Review the work permission, family records, insurance, tax and social-security questions rather than simply moving the return ticket. Ask which contractual terms and official records need action. A verbal request to stay longer should not be treated as permission to continue the activity.
Agree a review point
Choose a personal review date early enough to ask the relevant providers about an extension or return. Retain approvals and unresolved items together. The worksheet helps negotiate and organise a finite assignment; it does not classify a worker as posted, decide tax treatment or guarantee a position on return.
