A visiting relative or a dependent resident? Separate the family plans

Describe a relative’s actual purpose, intended duration and activities before comparing visit and family-residence routes. Keep a temporary visit distinct from a plan to live, work or study with the household.

What the official guidance establishes

UK visitor guidance says applicants must show they will leave at the end of the visit. Your Europe separately provides family-residence guidance for relatives joining someone in another EU country. Read UKVI: visitor supporting-document guidance for the original scope and current instructions.

Write the real plan plainly

For each relative, record why they are coming, the proposed dates, accommodation and activities. Avoid writing “visit” simply because it appears administratively simpler when the intended arrangement is a move. Keep uncertain duration as a question needing resolution rather than inventing a departure plan.

Compare official routes separately

Use the destination’s visitor and relevant family-residence pages for the actual circumstances. Record permitted activities, evidence and the applicant/sponsor details needed for an enquiry. A family connection is not, by itself, your worksheet’s answer about which permission applies.

Check practical arrangements against the route

Ask separate questions about work, care, schooling and healthcare access when relevant. Keep the funding and accommodation plan realistic under the actual intended stay. Resolve a mismatch before making commitments that assume a visitor can perform an activity the route does not cover.

Worked planning example

A fictional relative initially plans a short family visit but then considers staying to work. The household reopens the route enquiry using that changed intention. It does not keep using the original visit description as though the plan had not changed.

Choose the enquiry from the genuine plan and the destination’s official framework. Keep the next action in the moving planner and use the guide library for the next part of your move.
