Choose a city after choosing a country: compare practical access

Compare cities using the same household needs and a realistic weekly routine. Start with the actual workplace, school or essential service, then examine housing and transport around it. Country-level enthusiasm and a holiday visit cannot answer whether a particular address supports the life you are planning.

Compare cities using the same household needs and a realistic weekly routine. Start with the actual workplace, school or essential service, then examine housing and transport around it. Country-level enthusiasm and a holiday visit cannot answer whether a particular address supports the life you are planning.

Use local operating information

Transport for London’s official planner provides journey options and access to service-status information for London. It is an example of a local operator source that can help investigate a specific route. A city comparison elsewhere needs its own operator and service evidence rather than a London result or a generic map estimate. Transport for London: Plan a journey.

Compare an identical weekly basket

Use the same number of travellers, required arrival times and housing needs in every city. Record dates and source quality. Separate a provider’s confirmed answer from an indicative advert and an assumption. An unknown essential service should remain visible instead of being assigned an optimistic score.

Use a sample week rather than a city stereotype

Illustrative exercise: plot a school drop-off, an early shift, an appointment and a weekend grocery trip. One city may offer a shorter work journey but leave the appointment or childcare route unresolved. Record that trade-off explicitly. Do not claim the exercise establishes the general quality of either city’s schools, safety or public transport.

Choose the next local enquiry

Identify the uncertainty most likely to change the housing or city decision and contact the responsible provider. Keep rule questions, such as permission to work or enrolment eligibility, with their actual authorities. The result should be a dated comparison and a useful question, not an unsupported ranking of places to immigrate.
