Check the commute before choosing a home abroad

Compare the actual journey at the time you must travel, including walking, transfers and the trip home. A nearby station is not a complete commute plan. Use the local operator's current information to compare housing options, then make a separate allowance for the uncertainty you have not checked.

Compare the actual journey at the time you must travel, including walking, transfers and the trip home. A nearby station is not a complete commute plan. Use the local operator’s current information to compare housing options, then make a separate allowance for the uncertainty you have not checked.

What an operator's planner can contribute

Transport for London’s official journey planner lets users select journey preferences, including walking-related options, and links to service status information. It is a London tool, not a worldwide transport database. Other locations require the relevant operator’s own routes, accessibility information, fare details and service updates. Transport for London: Plan a journey.

Compare the same journey conditions

Choose an ordinary work or school day and an awkward return time, such as the end of an evening shift. Record the search date so that a route change does not disappear into an old screenshot. Treat an unconfirmed accessible connection as a question, not as a feature the home definitely offers.

Look beyond a shorter map distance

Illustrative comparison: a home near the workplace requires a connection that finishes before your shift ends, while a more distant home has a direct return service. The first option is not automatically cheaper after the return journey is considered. Add actual fare information and any quoted alternative transport cost. These are personal comparison figures, not predictions of transport prices.

Turn uncertainty into a viewing question

Ask about the real building entrance, route to the stop and any late-night access constraints. If access needs are important, contact the operator about the particular stations or services. Keep housing and transport evidence together; a landlord’s statement that the commute is easy should not replace your own dated route enquiry.
