Closing home-country contracts before migration: create a notice calendar

Make a provider-by-provider notice calendar before closing home-country services. Review the actual contract, renewal date and cancellation method, then connect the closure to access you still need during travel. Do not cancel a service merely because a monthly payment is visible, or assume stopping the payment ends the agreement.

Make a provider-by-provider notice calendar before closing home-country services. Review the actual contract, renewal date and cancellation method, then connect the closure to access you still need during travel. Do not cancel a service merely because a monthly payment is visible, or assume stopping the payment ends the agreement.

Start with the payment record and the terms

The UK’s MoneyHelper recommends reviewing bank and card statements for recurring subscriptions, checking renewal dates and contacting providers to cancel unwanted services. It also warns about possible early-exit penalties. Its consumer guidance supports checking the actual terms, rather than a universal notice period for every service or country. MoneyHelper: Do not forget to cancel subscriptions.

Use a closure and dependency calendar

Group household services without assuming they share cancellation rules. Keep the provider’s written response and any return instructions. Record a chosen preparation date separately from the contractual notice deadline, so that a personal reminder does not become an invented contract term.

Close access in the right order

Illustrative situation: a person plans to cancel a phone contract but still needs text messages to recover a banking account. Resolve the bank’s accepted recovery or number-change process first, then follow the provider’s closure terms. Keep both confirmations. The cheapest cancellation date may not be the most workable date if it interrupts an essential account.

Finish with evidence, not a deleted app

Retain cancellation acknowledgements, final invoices and any deposit or equipment-return records. Ask about a disputed charge through the provider’s complaints route. If the move is delayed, review affected dates rather than assuming the original notice can be reversed. This calendar organises the process and does not decide contractual liability or a right to a refund.
