Keep currencies and assumptions visible when converting a moving budget. Record the rate, date, conversion direction and fees instead of treating an old estimate as guaranteed spending power.

What the official guidance establishes

The US CFPB’s remittance guidance shows exchange rate, fees, taxes and the amount received as separate cost information for covered transfers from the United States. Read US CFPB: international transfer costs and receipts for the original scope and current instructions.

Choose one reporting currency

Keep every original amount and currency in the budget, then add a separate converted column. State the rate as “one unit of currency A equals this many of currency B.” Use a dated source or actual provider quote so another person can reproduce the arithmetic.

Separate conversion from total cost

Record the provider’s quoted fees and any stated recipient deductions separately. A planning rate used in a spreadsheet is not a transfer booking. Before payment, replace the estimate with a current quote and keep the recipient amount visible.

Run a simple planning scenario

Create a second assumption that gives you less destination currency for the same funds. Compare the effect on rent, deposits and the first month’s essentials. Label it as your own scenario, not a currency forecast or a predicted market movement.

Worked planning example

In a fictional budget, 1,000 units converted at 0.80 produce 800 destination-currency units before fees. At an illustrative 0.75, they produce 750. The 50-unit difference is a planning scenario only; neither rate is presented as a live quote.

Keep actual conversion quotes separate from illustrative arithmetic and avoid counting an estimate as money already transferred. Keep the next action in the moving planner and use the guide library for the next part of your move.
