Prepare the Japanese municipal address-registration visit from your actual residence record and new address. Keep immigration documents and the local notification task together in one arrival handover.

What the official guidance establishes

The Japanese Embassy’s long-stay guidance describes resident registration with the local authority after moving into an address and gives a 14-day notification period for the long-stay holders covered by that guidance. Read Embassy of Japan in the UK: long-stay arrival information for the original scope and current instructions.

Write the address as a usable record

Record the full address, move-in date and the municipality responsible for it. Preserve the spelling supplied by the accommodation provider and ask about any unfamiliar building or unit notation. Keep an address question separate from a decision about which property to rent.

Read the municipality’s own checklist

Use the official local-authority page for the visit and the residence record you were issued. Note what the authority says about the card or passport, the notification form and any appointment arrangements. If the card is to be issued later, ask which procedure applies instead of assuming a missing card removes the address task.

Plan later changes as a separate service

When another move is planned, create a new question about change-of-address notification. Keep the completion record for the first address so it is clear which details have already been reported. Do not use the date of an old hotel booking as a substitute for the genuine move-in date.

Your working sheet

Worked planning example

A fictional newcomer initially stays in short-term accommodation and later signs a different address arrangement. Their file distinguishes both dates and asks the municipality which notification is appropriate. They do not invent a permanent address to make the timeline simpler.

Confirm the current local process; this guide covers preparation and does not determine an individual notification exception. Keep the next action in the moving planner and use the guide library for the next part of your move.
