Proof of address after arrival: ask each service what it accepts

Ask each bank, employer or public office exactly which address evidence it accepts before ordering documents or committing to a tenancy. Create a recipient-by-recipient list. A document that identifies where you sleep may answer a different question from proof of your legal residence or eligibility for a service.

A UK banking example

MoneyHelper, the UK’s public money guidance service, explains that banks can consider different forms of identity and address evidence. It describes alternatives for people without conventional documents or a fixed address. This is UK banking guidance; it does not establish the evidence accepted by a municipality, another bank or another country. MoneyHelper: How to beat ID issues when opening a bank account.

Ask a specific acceptance question

Write the receiving organisation’s answer in its own context. Include the account or service type, whether the document must show your name, and how the office wants a copy delivered. Avoid assuming that an online community’s successful example applies to your application.

RecipientEvidence enquiryAnswer to retain
Chosen bankCan you accept my temporary address and current ID?Named team and written document list
EmployerWhich address is required for payroll correspondence?HR instructions
Local officeWhich household record must accompany registration?Official service page
Joint householdWhat if the bill is in my partner's name?Accepted alternative, if any

Temporary accommodation creates two questions

Illustrative situation: you have a hotel reservation for the first month, while a bank asks for residential address evidence. Instead of presenting the reservation as automatically sufficient, explain the temporary arrangement and ask what evidence is accepted for that account. Separately ask the relevant registration office what counts for its process. Put both answers in the file; one does not resolve the other.

Keep the document request proportionate

Use the wider document checklist for organisation. This worksheet adds the recipient’s reason and acceptance answer, so it can expose a circular dependency such as needing an account before obtaining a bill. Ask that recipient about an accepted alternative rather than making or altering a document. Share copies through its verified channel.
