Connect the replacement passport to the existing New Zealand visa through the applicable official transfer process. A passport renewal does not itself show that the immigration record has been updated.
Read INZ's current visa-transfer instructions
INZ says a visa must be transferred to a new passport for continued travel when the old passport is replaced, including expiry, loss, damage or a name change. This applies to eVisas as well as old visa labels. Its page identifies a separate process for a particular interim-visa category. Read Immigration New Zealand: Transfer or confirmation of a visa.
Your working sheet
The following is an editorial organisation tool, not an official application checklist. Copy the rows that help and fill them with your own verified records.
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Old record | Keep the existing visa details and old passport evidence available |
| New passport | Compare identity names and document details carefully |
| Transfer | Choose the current INZ process for the actual visa category and retain the result |
A practical example
For example, a resident obtains a replacement passport after a name change. Their preparation file should show both the identity change evidence and the new document, then follow INZ's instructions. Booking under the new name alone does not complete the visa transfer.
Before the next step
Use the official transfer form guidance and check any special process identified for the current visa. Confirm the updated record before a planned journey. Keep the passport update separate from any application needed to extend or change the visa itself.
