Check the route, applicant circumstances and effective date behind an immigration claim before relying on an old article, video or screenshot. Use the authority’s current guidance and update history to identify what changed. When applicability remains unclear, preserve the conflicting versions and ask about the actual case rather than blending them.
A current page can document its changes
GOV.UK’s current outside-UK processing guidance includes a dated update history and explains the stages used to measure processing. It also lists reasons a case may take longer. That structure illustrates how publication context and definitions matter; an old screenshot of a duration is not the same evidence as the current route guidance. Create a claim-version comparison
Copy only the particular point you are researching into the log. Identify whose situation it describes and which official route would support it. A recent upload date does not prove that every rule inside a video is current; record the authority’s source and effective wording separately.
| Evidence item | What to identify | Unanswered question |
|---|---|---|
| Old article or video | Date, route and applicant context | Is the claim still applicable? |
| Official current page | Exact relevant section and checked date | Does it cover this stage? |
| Change history | Effective or transitional wording | Which cases are affected? |
| Case-specific advice | Scope of authority response | Does it resolve this applicant's timing? |
Do not mix two rule versions
Illustrative situation: a guide describes an older application process while the authority now distinguishes applications made before and after a change. Put your intended or actual submission date beside that wording. If it is unclear which version covers the case, ask the responsible authority or a qualified adviser. Do not select the more convenient paragraph without establishing applicability.
Keep the useful parts of older material
An older personal story may still suggest practical questions about housing or adaptation. Label those observations as experiences and verify any rule separately. When sharing a source with family, include its date and the question it answers so a helpful planning note does not become an unqualified claim that everyone can follow the same route.
