Prepare for a government appointment in a new country

Build the appointment pack from the actual notice and office instructions. Identify why you are attending, what records are requested and how to arrange language or access support. Keep the booking confirmation and the questions you need answered together, rather than bringing an unorganised copy of every document you own.

An appointment notice is case-specific

USCIS’s naturalisation preparation guidance tells applicants to follow the date, time and location on their notice and identifies documents for particular appointments. This illustrates why an appointment’s purpose matters. Its naturalisation instructions are not a universal document list for other immigration offices or services. USCIS: Citizenship What to Expect.

Translate the notice into an action sheet

For each requested item, record whether the instruction asks for an original, a copy or another format. Where the notice is unclear, send a focused question to the verified office. Arrange interpretation or accessibility through that office’s process; do not assume an accompanying friend can perform every role.

Prepare for a missing original

Illustrative situation: a notice asks for a civil record, but the original is held by another authority. Put the original’s location and any receipt in the sheet, then ask the appointment office what it accepts in that situation. Do not silently substitute a scan and assume acceptance. Keep the reply attached to the specific item so the reason is clear on the day.

Record the outcome before leaving the process

Keep any written next-step instructions, reference number and submission receipt. If an instruction was given verbally and you did not understand it, ask how to obtain clarification. A completed appointment may be one stage in a larger application; do not infer a final grant from attendance alone or from an encouraging conversation.
