Using an interpreter at an official appointment: arrange the right support

Ask the office how interpretation is arranged before the appointment, using its own rules for the specific service. Confirm what support is available or permitted, whether advance notice is needed and how confidentiality is handled. A bilingual friend may be helpful in daily life, but should not be assumed acceptable for every official role.

Support can have a formal request pathway

The UK’s immigration appeal guidance says an appellant using the online service can request extra support or adjustments for a hearing, including an interpreter or wheelchair access. That is a UK tribunal example. A visa interview, registration office or medical appointment may have different arrangements and must be asked separately. UK Government: Appeal a visa or immigration decision.

Prepare an interpretation request

Name the language and, if relevant, dialect and practical communication need. Ask who supplies the interpreter, what qualifications or independence rules apply and whether any costs fall to you. Confirm the arrangement through the office’s verified channel rather than relying only on a general booking acknowledgement.

Prepare facts without rehearsing an invented answer

Illustrative exercise: make a private list of names, dates, technical terms and genuine documents likely to arise. Ask how misunderstandings should be corrected during the appointment. Do not create a memorised story or ask an interpreter to improve the underlying evidence. The purpose is accurate communication of your own information.

Plan how to understand the outcome

Ask how written instructions, decisions or follow-up requirements will be explained and whether another appointment is needed for clarification. Retain the office’s actual response about support. This worksheet helps prepare the arrangement; it does not establish an entitlement to a particular interpreter or set the rules for every jurisdiction.
