What the official guidance establishes

The US FTC warns about copied or invented rental listings and recommends checking the property and contracting party. It also cautions that a tour alone does not guarantee a listing is genuine or available. Read US Federal Trade Commission: rental listing scams for the original scope and current instructions.

Verify before comparing convenience

Find the provider independently and check the property address and actual booking contract. Confirm payment instructions through a trusted contact. Keep a pressure-to-pay message or conflicting address as an unresolved issue, not a normal part of a bargain.

Compare the landing needs

Use your actual arrival time, household size, accessibility needs and essential appointments to compare locations. Ask about check-in, internet, cancellation and any permitted use of the address where relevant. Do not assume a short-stay booking supplies documentation accepted by an immigration or municipal service.

Keep a fallback within reach

Calculate the complete stay using quoted rent, deposits, fees and transport assumptions. Note the extension and cancellation terms and a realistic alternative if the permanent-housing search takes longer. Keep the contract, contact details and confirmation available during travel.

Worked planning example

A fictional household compares a cheaper remote room with a more accessible short stay near necessary appointments. It adds transport and late-check-in costs to both. The result is a practical comparison using the household’s quotes, not a claim about typical city rents.
