Embassy consulate or immigration department? Send the question to the right office

Define the exact service you need before choosing an office: a visa decision, residence renewal, passport replacement or consular document are different tasks. Find the authority responsible through an official government site, then send a concise enquiry that names the route and stage without exposing a complete identity file.

An embassy's nationality does not define every service

The UK government’s guidance for British people abroad separates passport, consular document and foreign visa enquiries. It states that British embassies, high commissions and consulates do not issue visa recommendations for other countries. Its service boundaries are a useful British example, not a description of every consulate’s remit. UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: Documents for British people abroad.

Route the question by decision and stage

Write down what you want the office to decide or explain. Use the service page to identify territory, residence jurisdiction and any application-stage restrictions. If an office refers you elsewhere, retain the referral and verify the new contact rather than continuing through an unverified intermediary.

TaskAuthority questionUseful context

Write a question that can be routed

Illustrative enquiry: ‘I live in Country A and am researching a named study route for Country B. Which official service explains where I should submit this application?’ This is more useful than asking your own embassy to approve a destination visa. Use placeholders in a public draft and provide sensitive references only through the office’s verified private channel when required.

Treat an answer within its stated scope

A referral, appointment or receipt is not necessarily a decision. Ask what the response actually resolves and which further office owns the next step. Record the official URL and the date of the reply so that another household member can follow the same task without relying on an agent’s unsupported explanation of who is responsible.
