Find the NOC from the work you actually did, using the title only as a starting search term. Keep a duties comparison so a code can be explained from genuine employment evidence.

Start with a factual duties list

IRCC uses NOC 2021 to categorise occupations by training, education, experience and responsibilities. Its instructions tell readers to check the main duties on the NOC website and find a different occupation if those duties do not match their work. The NOC website takes precedence over IRCC's reference table if they conflict. Read IRCC: Find your National Occupational Classification.

Your working sheet

The following is an editorial organisation tool, not an official application checklist. Copy the rows that help and fill them with your own verified records.

CheckWhat to record
Real dutiesWrite a factual description from your employment records

ComparisonMark matching duties and important contradictions instead of counting similar words

A practical example

Imagine two people called operations manager: one manages a retail location and another manages an information-systems team. Searching the shared title does not establish that both belong in the same occupation. Their actual responsibilities should drive separate research, with discrepancies resolved before either code is used.

Before the next step

Keep the classification explanation with the relevant job period. If the duties remain unclear, seek clarification through the official classification resources or appropriate advice. Do not change the factual employment record to fit a preferred immigration outcome.
