Build both a planned timeline and a delay timeline while an immigration decision is pending. Link work, housing and study commitments to actual decision or document events where possible. A published service estimate is useful context, but it should not be treated as a promise that your case will be decided by a chosen travel date.
Read how an estimate is defined
The UK’s outside-country visa processing guidance explains when processing starts and ends and lists reasons a case may take longer. It tells applicants not to book travel before receiving a decision and says UKVI will not reimburse expenses if processing takes longer than expected. These are scoped UK instructions, not a worldwide processing commitment. UK Government: Visa processing times for applications outside the UK.
Give each commitment a decision dependency
Use current provider terms rather than assuming a deposit is refundable. Ask an employer, school or accommodation provider what changes are possible before paying or confirming dates. Label a personal target, published estimate and confirmed official decision as different kinds of event in the calendar.
| Commitment | Planned timeline | Delay question |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | Proposed start after required permission | Can the employer change the start? |
| Study | Intended intake and enrolment | What deferral terms actually apply? |
| Housing | Arrival booking and later tenancy | Which dates or payments can change? |
| Travel | Itinerary research | When is commitment appropriate under the route instructions? |
A delay scenario should be workable
Illustrative exercise: move the expected decision later while leaving the school’s intake and tenancy dates unchanged. Identify where the plan first becomes impossible. Contact that provider about genuine alternatives and record its answer. Do not assume an expedited decision, a refund or an extension just because the original plan no longer works.
Update when evidence changes
Keep official requests and actual submissions beside the timeline. Use the authority’s stated contact process if an enquiry is appropriate, rather than repeatedly seeking a prediction from unofficial agents. The two timelines help reveal commitments that need flexibility; they do not predict processing time or replace the decision and travel instructions for the actual application.
