Read tuition and relocation deposit terms before paying, using separate scenarios for cancellation, delay, refusal and deferral. Keep the actual provider policy and the payment record together.

What the official guidance establishes

The UK CMA’s undergraduate-student guidance says universities should provide course costs, payment arrangements, terms and information about cancellation rights. This is UK consumer guidance, not a worldwide promise of a visa-related refund. Read UK CMA: consumer rights for undergraduate students for the original scope and current instructions.

Identify the contracting party and payment

Record who receives the money, what the deposit reserves and how it is credited later. Keep a booking fee or agent charge separate from tuition or accommodation. Save the terms that apply at the time of payment rather than relying on a later version.

Create a scenario table from the wording

For each scenario, enter the policy clause, required evidence, notice deadline and stated deduction. Use “not answered” where the terms do not address the situation. Ask the provider a specific written question before treating the money as refundable.

Check timing and practical recovery

Record how to give notice and what proof of receipt to keep. Ask how a currency conversion, intermediary payment or partial attendance is handled if relevant. Seek appropriate consumer advice for a disputed term rather than assuming a general article resolves the contract.

Your working sheet

Worked planning example

A fictional student finds a policy covering refusal but saying nothing about a decision that is still pending at the course start. Their enquiry asks about that exact delay scenario. They do not apply the refusal clause to a different event without confirmation.

Keep written answers with the policy and receipt before making another linked commitment. Keep the next action in the moving planner and use the guide library for the next part of your move.
